about

Within the mighty force of the World Saxophone Quartet, Bluiett's baritone saxophone has always been able to move between experimentation and tradition without ever losing sight of its fiery rhythms. In dialogue with Chief Bey's percussion in "Rain Shout", as well as in quartet with the three formidable collaborators of John Hicks on piano, the monumental Fred Hopkins on double bass and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums, Bluiett builds subtle grooves imbued with his powerful Black sound. From the ancient to the future, this musical conversation reveals different shades of soul, and the solos feel like bullets that hit right in the heart of this incredible piece.
