Made less than a year after the death of the great Charles Mingus, this evocative tribute, by his most faithful and long-standing drummer, is honest and sincere. Recorded in Milan in quartet with members of the Mingus Big Band, with whom he was touring Europe, the record doesn’t include Mingus’ own compositions but rather original ones (and emblematic standard “If You Could See Me Now”) that illustrate how the double bass player’s world was able to summon enormous energy. "Olduvai Gorge” (named after the archaeological site in Tanzania where some of the most ancient traces of human existence have been found) is a tribal and profound Richmond solo, which evokes the evolution of Pithecanthropus Erectus and reveals a truly visionary instrumentalist.
